Asparagus Experience

By : Ontario Kitchen | On : 2012-05-12 | Category : Asparagus, Beer

This week, we kick off the growing season with one of Ontario's first fresh crops: Asparagus! Although most of us know this vegetable as those 8 inch spears in the grocery store, the plant actually grows to 5 feet tall. The tops are what ends up wrapped in bunchs, the rest is woody stems. The spears in the store will have a bit of the tougher stem at the bottom, but if you grab the bottom and top and bend (think of snapping a twig), the asparagus will break leaving the tougher stem to be tossed. So, how are we going to start off the harvest? By opening a bottle of dark beer, firing up the grill, and getting cooking!

Use a dark, full flavoured beer. The grilling really mellows out the taste, smells fantastic, and tastes even better. You can try different seasonings to compliment your main dish (perhaps some parmesan, or garlic powder?)
